The Circus et Panem collection is inspired by the Latin phrase panem et circenses, which alludes to a tactic used by governments to appease public discontent. Governments have historically provided citizens with superficial solutions or distractions ("bread and circus") to distract from the root of societal problems.  These pieces are a parody of that political scheme.
